Anxiety & Stress Relief
Overview
Stress and anxiety are among the fastest-growing health concerns in the United States. CDC survey data shows the share of young adults reporting depression symptoms rose from 16.4% to 25.0% between 2019 and 2023, and stress-related complaints — tension, racing thoughts, trouble unwinding — are one of the most common reasons patients seek acupuncture.
Symptoms
Chronic stress and anxiety can show up as more than worry — many patients also experience muscle tension (especially in the neck and shoulders), disrupted sleep, digestive upset, fatigue, and a general sense of being unable to relax.
The TCM View
Traditional Chinese Medicine most often links stress and anxiety to Liver Qi stagnation and a disturbance of the Shen (spirit/mind) housed in the Heart. When Qi does not flow smoothly, patients commonly experience the tightness, irritability, and racing thoughts associated with stress.
What the Research Says
Research on acupuncture specifically for anxiety and stress is still developing compared to research on pain conditions, but studies point to a plausible mechanism: acupuncture has been shown to trigger the release of endorphins and to help regulate the body's stress-response (HPA axis) activity, which may explain why many patients report feeling calmer and more relaxed after treatment.
Acupuncture is best used as a complementary approach alongside — not a replacement for — care from your primary care physician or a licensed mental health provider, particularly for anxiety that is persistent, severe, or affecting daily functioning.
How We Treat Stress & Anxiety at Dragon Phoenix
Dragon Phoenix Acupuncture's approach to stress and anxiety combines body acupuncture to release Liver Qi stagnation with auricular (ear) acupuncture, a protocol widely used for relaxation and stress reduction, sometimes paired with Tuina for patients carrying tension in the neck and shoulders.
What to Expect
Many patients notice a sense of calm during and immediately after their first session. For lasting change, a series of weekly treatments is typically recommended, and many patients continue with periodic visits during particularly stressful periods.
